About UID Punk Zine: Our Mission, Editorial Focus, and Team Approach

We started UID because the Australian punk and pop-punk scene deserved a publication that actually shows up. Not one that writes about it from a desk in another country, but one that stands in the sweat and spilled beer at The Tote on a Friday night, yelling over a support band about to blow up. That’s the energy we wanted to bottle when we launched this zine, and it still drives every review, gig guide and interview we publish.

Our Mission: Amplifying Punk Rock Australia

Our mission is simple: document and celebrate punk rock Australia in all its loud, messy, DIY glory. From backyard shows in Frankston to national tours that sell out the Oxford Art Factory, we connect fans with the bands, venues and promoters that keep this culture alive. We cover Melbourne gigs at The Tote, Sydney live music at Crowbar, and everything in between, because a scene this good shouldn’t rely on word of mouth alone.

Why We Started UID

Too much coverage of Australian punk felt like an afterthought, tacked onto international news or reduced to nostalgia pieces. We wanted a dedicated home for the here and now, plus the history that got us here.

Supporting Local Scenes from Brisbane to Perth

We spread the love beyond the east coast. Brisbane’s basement shows, Adelaide’s pub circuit, Perth’s DIY spaces and Hobart’s small but fierce community all get the same respect as a packed Crowbar gig. Regional towns often have the most passionate crowds and the least coverage, so we chase those stories too, whether it’s a Geelong all-ages show or a touring band hitting Wagga on a Tuesday.

Editorial Focus: Pop Punk Albums, Gigs, and Scene Stories

Our coverage balances the classics with what’s landing this week. We review pop punk albums from legends like Bodyjar and The Living End, but we’re just as likely to spotlight a debut EP from a band playing their third show. We run gig guides for Melbourne and Sydney, interview artists at every level, and publish opinion pieces that don’t pull punches. We also share practical punk band tips for emerging artists trying to book their first tour, covering songwriting, touring and survival.

Our Team Approach: Informed, Opinionated, and On the Ground

Our editorial team is small, independent and genuinely obsessed with this music. We’re writers, photographers and scene veterans who still buy records, still queue at the door, and still argue about setlists on the drive home. Between us we’ve played in bands, booked shows, worked merch desks and stood front row at more gigs than we can count. We prioritise firsthand experience over press releases: if we review a show, we were there, and if we recommend an album, we’ve listened to it more than once. We’re not here to flatter publicists, and we’ll tell you when something doesn’t work.

  • We attend shows in person, not via livestream.
  • We buy the records we review.
  • We talk to bands directly, not just their labels.
  • We publish corrections when we get it wrong.
